GUARDA ROBA

The shop is called Guarda Roba, which means both wardrobe and “watch stuff”, is created as a mirror of your personal wardrobe where you can find what you need from shoes to clothes.

The shop was created totally for fun, since both the owners, Lula and Annalisa, have already another primary business. This is why the shop is open late in the afternoon, two days during the week, and Saturdays & Sundays in the winter season. During summer they open more evenings during the week.

Guardaroba came to light from passions; Annalisa’s love for shoes and Lula’s adoration for bags. Here you can admire the finest samples but keep in mind that every single item can’t be repeated, they are unique and customized.

Lula is the owner of a belt manufacturing company, so after several years she accumulated a treasure in studs and leather left from other creations. She is a hardcore researcher of passementerie, whether vintage from the 70s, Indian or otherwise, which she uses to assemble the bags lining.

That’s why these bags are gorgeous inside and fabulous outside! This is her speciality: she can’t repeat herself twice, so your product will be the one and only made in that certain way.

We love to be unique in a way or another, don’t we?

The clothes you find in the shop come from Cesena, designed and produced from the fashion designer Valentina (brand: “Come Le Ciliegie”).

Are you craving for a customized Italian item like one of these? Come to the shop with your fabric if you have a special one, or leave it all in Lula and Annalisa’s hands. Find them at the Italian seaside in their shop or at the Matrioska event twice a year.

It is always time for shopping!

Jesús Cañadas

“As you can see, there have been many changes in my life in the last twelve years, but one thing has always remained the same: my passion for literature. I have been reading for almost as long as I can remember. At some point, I also started writing my own stories.”

Let’s start talking about you, who is Jesús Cañadas?

I was born in the south of Spain in 1980, in a small city called Cádiz. I lived there since I was 23 years old. At that time I left to study in Venice. I was going to leave for just one year, but it turned out that I never came back. Since then, I have lived in 13 different cities: Madrid, Barcelona, Osaka, Lecce, San Sebastián, Göttingen, Frankfurt… right now I spend most of the time in Berlin. As you can see, there have been many changes in my life in the last twelve years, but one thing has always remained the same: my passion for literature. I have been reading for almost as long as I can remember. At some point, I also started writing my own stories.

When did you start writing and how did it happen?

I guess these things just happen. I have been a huge fantasy / horror fan since I was a teenager. You start day-dreaming about writing the same stories that touch you in any way. Then you imitate your favorite writers and, needless to say, you write crap. You spend an indecent amount of time writing crap, until one day something switches in your head and you understand how to write something that is neither plagiarism of those authors nor crap. That is the beginning. After that you have to learn how to write for real.

I wrote my first crappy short story when I was fifteen, I think. Luckily for the whole world, it has been lost for ages. I spent the next twelve years trying to figure out what makes a good story. Writing a novel seemed too far away for me. I used to tell myself I was not ready yet. Until one day, while I was living in Göttingen, I said to myself: “You stupid fuck; when do you know you are going to be ready? Come on and give it a try!” The result was my first novel, which I finished in Osaka: “El Baile de los Secretos.”

I guess that was pretty much it. I have not stopped ever since.

Which kind of writer are you?

Until the present day I have written three books: “El baile de los secretos”, a dark fantasy heavily inspired by early Tim Burton’s works or films such as Pan’s Labyrinth, was published in 2011.

Then came “Los nombres muertos”, a sort of classic adventure novel starring H.P. Lovecraft himself, where he is forced to travel around the world to find a book that does not exist. That one was published by Penguin Random House in 2013. It will be translated into Portuguese and published in Brazil at some point in 2015.

My third novel “Anochece” could be described as a murder mystery with a strong fantastic component. It will also be published in Spain in 2015. I am currently writing my fourth novel, from which I still cannot tell you much. But this much I can tell: there is fantasy, there is horror, there will be blood!

As you can see, fantasy is my favorite genre. It is not the only genre I read; I actually do not advise to read only one genre. But no matter what I write, some fantastic element ends up finding its way into the story. However, even though you can find monsters, demons, cults, nazis, cannibals, giant squids and whatnot in my stories, I think at some level they all deal with one simple topic: family.

Hobbies – Interests – Passions

People usually think that authors have intense, amazing lives. The truth is we are regular ordinary folks who wake up, sit in front of the computer with a coffee mug for a couple of hours and then go to work. The amazing things happen inside my head, but from outside it could not me more boring. My interests are most ordinary: I like travelling, I consider myself a decent cook, I am also a big cinema fan… … Hello? … We are in an interview! WAKE UP!

Where do you get the inspiration to write? How much of you and your life is in your books?

Literally everywhere. It can be a film, something I read in a book, a comic, maybe a conversation… actually, all of the latter together. Everything mixes in your head and lays there for hours, days, whatever. Then you go jogging or do the dishes and, bam! you get the idea. However, the idea is not the problem. The difficult part is sitting your ass down and turning that amazing idea into an amazing story. That part is hard as fuck; that is why writing has much less to do with inspiration as it has to do with work.

Everything from me and my life is in my books. I am part of all the characters, even though something it is incredibly difficult to control them.

Can you “describe” us how it works when you write?

Exactly as I explained before: boring. I wake up at 7.00 a.m. I pee. I make coffee. I am grumpy and feel like shit and complain about everything and my back hurts and I ask myself what I am doing with my life and why I don’t sleep more. I drink coffee. I feel better. Much better, actually. It is 7.30, so I better start hitting the keyboard. Then I write for two hours. Sometimes I hit 2.000 words, sometimes I do not even reach 400. Sometimes every single sentence sucks and I fell that I do not know how words match together anymore. But other times, and this is why I everyone writes, the story is alive and you feel like it comes through you, that you are really just a channel. This state of mind is called “the flow” and it is almost like a drug.

I also have a day job, so at 9:30 I stop and pretend I am working. I work from home, so this is not difficult. I will spend the rest of the day thinking what happens next in the novel. After work I will try to read at least other two hours. I keep a notebook close to write down any idea.

That is basically it: Wake up. Write. Repeat.

What do you miss from Spain? How is your life in Germany; what do you like more and what would you change?

Even in this question I am boring, you see? I miss the food, the sun and my friends, just as every other south European living in Germany. However, I cannot complain: I have a good job that leaves me enough time to write. I enjoy life in Berlin; I would not change it for any other city in Germany. Plus, my writing career is going pretty well: my second novel was shortlisted for every single fantasy award in Spain, plus it has been translated. Critics have listed my name among a new wave of writers that people should pay attention too!

As I said, I cannot complain. Nevertheless, I do complain, for complaining is a part of a Spaniard’s identity: I wish I had more time to write and more opportunities to visit my family in Spain. And I wish winter were not so cold in Germany!!

Let’ s talk about your last book: feel free to promote it!

Well, I can gladly promote my last book: “Los nombres muertos” (The Dead Names).

Matteo Vanzolini

“A one-of-a -kind talent in fashion design inflamed by the fires of creativity.”

Matteo Vanzolini, born and trained in Rimini in 1983.

A one-of-a -kind talent in fashion design inflamed by the fires of creativity, Matteo gives birth over and over again to shoes, bags and skirts created with an unique and precious Italian touch and a keen aesthetic sense for women.

An Artistic High School diploma followed by the graduation at C.E.R.C.A.L. – Centro Ricerca e Scuola Internazionale Calzaturiera – in one of the most relevant shoe industrial districts left him with experience in practice and technical supervision, and a strong passion for stylistic learning. The importance of meeting with the designer Diego Dolcini, as personal assistant for the main line was undeniable. This experience was essential for a more overall technical and stylistic training; with the style office he worked on the capsule collections for the brand Scholl, Scholl Fashion and Scholl Luxury. After years of collaboration, in 2011 Matteo decided to create his own brand “diMètiu”, starting a new personal path always and exclusively oriented to women shoes.

“The idea to have my personal creative space was born in 2012, I felt the necessity to express myself and find a meeting point for all the ladies who desired diMetiu creations, and study with them custom-tailored items on demand. With the creative support of Gotti & Mascia studio, Studio of interior design and Corporate Identity, in only 4 months, on April  13th, 2013 I inaugurated Atelier diMetiu, in downtown Rimini.”

“The venue is what I always dreamt about; warm and cozy, intimate, a refined parlor inspired to the 50s, where the client could feel comfortable to sit and sip a cup of tea, free to wear the shoes and make a final decision in hush. My biggest ambition would be to place my creations to other dealers outside my city, I am already moving in this direction, I am taking into consideration the opening of a second shop where I can place all the unsold stocks.”

In his city, he is called “the boy who makes pretty shoes” because his classic and refined imprint meets the need of the young lady and the one of the mid age woman that desires a shoe of excellent quality that no one else possesses. The segment of the market Matteo has chosen is a medium-high target, his footwear are artisan productions, created from wise handicraftsman in a limited edition, unique pieces with special fabrics and refinements.

“My specialty, besides the utilization of classic leather such as nappa leather, suede, and python leader, I use High fashion precious fabrics. My research goes among local vintage markets and warehouses where I get lost with my curiosity to find the most particular and intriguing fabric. I love using Tartan in every color, and in the winter collection 2014- 2015 I have used six different types.”

Matteo told us that once a client entered his shop and told him these words: “I wanted to thank you on behalf of all the women because you make us dream with these shoes and your marvelous shop windows”, that comment really moved me and this is a joy for me. Beside the difficult crisis we are living through in Italy, I am strongly motivated, I won’t give up.

“My passion for footwear was born several years ago, my mum and my grandmother used to take me with them touring different factory outlets in San Mauro Pascoli, and I guess that is when my passion started, seeing those incredible shoes worn by my mother. My professional career started after Artistic High school, in the private school C.E.R.C.A.L. for the moment I am totally concentrated in the women universe, but it happened that some men asked me if I would produce a men’s collection.

In my atelier you can find not only shoes but a complete line of high fashion skirts with a cut from the 50s, made with the same fabrics as the shoes to combine them and integrate also clutch bags strictly handmade in a mix of colors.”

NOH NEE, Dirndl à l’ Africaine

In Munich, Glockenbackviertel is the most famous neighborhood where many fashion designers and artists in general are based. Historically the favourite location of gays (which is often still a synonymous with creativity!) it is nowadays the best place to find new trends and enlightenment.

Now, imagine the colour and power of Africa, mixed with the deep tradition of Germany: this is Noh Nee[1], a shop close to Sendlinger Tor (Sendling Gate), in the south of the historic old town area of the city.

When we met in Glockenback to talk about Noh Nee, we were overwhelmed by the passion and energy of Rahmée Wetterich, one of the founders of this business. She started to tell us about a new App for tourists in which also Noh Nee is involved, and went on talking about the amazing recent experience in Brussels (Ethno Tendance Fashion Weekend Brussels 2014). Noh Nee is also in the “Museum der Kulturen” in Basel until 2019[2].

So, Noh Nee is really everywhere, or better said, in every place it should be.

The project is more than clothes, it is more about the mix of cultures and the passion for fashion, the influence of Africa with the lightness of the improvisation: we can say it because Noh Nee was somehow achieved by chance, the result of a great passion for creation, in particular for fashion.

The heart and head of the project is Marie Darouiche, the one who designs the clothes, since she has always been dealing with fashion, the person who decides to melt the tradition of the dirndl with the style from the ’50. This was made possible and started through the project of “Colour Mix of Africa”, an idea (and an exposition) that comes from Rahmée, her sister (as she explained us, it has nothing really to do with colours but about the influence of different cultures).

Now, just try to imagine an expensive kitchen and some multicolored dresses spread everywhere and the feeling you have everytime you bump into something completely stranger: you become curious and you get excited. That is how I imagine the reaction of the people who were there and met for the first time (without knowing it) at NOH NEE. It was 2010.

Since 2011, Cornelia Hobbhahn also became part of the project. At the moment Noh Nee does not mean only dirndl, but also slacks, shoes, coats and more… The manufactoring is in Passau (the “Three Rivers City”), Bavaria.

The magic of the dirndl is that it does not matter how big or tall people are, a dirndl fits everyone! It is easy to realize it just by looking at the many photos that Rahmée keeps in the shop; pictures sent by people who got married with a Noh Nee creation, or went to a gala, or simply to Oktoberfest…

Let’s talk about textile. Maybe some people think, as myself, that they come from Africa… it is not really true! I mean, they are african samples but most of them come from Holland. More than 100 years ago  the first prints came from Indonesia to Europe and since then they are constantly edited: some themes are already 150 years old. There are circa 270 colours.

The fabric is really special, hard and difficult to work, unlike what we see, for example, everywhere.
Often many of them come from China, and are not original (Rahmée gave us a tiny tipp: you can recognize the original one because it is printed on both sides. The colour, in a manner of speaking, goes through the textile).

Furthermore, they revisit the textile they buy from them to create new designs through a process of development. Marie always has to find new ideas and patterns to match everything.
As Rahmée said, when they go to purchase the textile, in the same moment she has one in her hands she already knows if it has potential, and what it can be used for.
She talks about “visualize”, a kind of seer who can see into the future of fabrics.

Everything is special and privileged, also the wonderful pieces that they found are limited… and that is also another reason why they are so unique.

Explanation for such big success? It’s the right solution for people who are looking for a new fashion style to wear again, or for the first time, such a traditional dress like a dirndl.

The format of Noh Nee is different because it is new, powerful, multicultural and gives emancipation to this bavarian (but not only) costume.

But, above all, it worked because of the passion they put in it: to hear Rahmée  is like seeing a ball of fire, not only because of her enthusiasm and competence, but because she loves the project and she puts extraordinary effort in it.

It is easy to be infected from the feeling of love she feels when she talks about Noh Nee!

Noh Nee, literally “a godsend”, is also engaged with a project called: “Education for Girls in Benin“.

The shop is in Hans-Sachs-Straße 2, Munich.

BOLLI SARTORIA CREATIVA

Actually, we never followed the rules of the world of fashion, we chose to follow our passion which bloomed from our love for the handmade…

We are Giulia and Caterina, born in the city of Arezzo under the Cancer sign.

Actually, we never followed the rules of the world of fashion, we chose to follow our passion, which bloomed from our love for the handmade and the small world we shape on ourselves, a universe made of pure craftsmanship. Bolli Sartoria Creativa was born officially on 10th March 2007, after 7 long years on working our way up. Copy of thinktwice (2)

We believe deeply in the freedom of expression and we are fascinated by how clothing contribute in being part of an identity. Thinking about what you are wearing is a choice; you chose the way  you want to feel with yourself and with your body. We are similar to “sponges” that’s why we get inspiration from anything that surround us. It could be a trip, a book, an art exhibition, a fabric… our purpose is to create only unique items!

Our customer base does not have an age limit, we serve children with a delicious collection for kids and ladies with trendy dresses. Most of our customers are Italian but we have also sold items to a Spanish shop in Barcelona, and thanks to wonderful friends around the world, we reached and we are appreciated also abroad.

We started our brand by producing hoodies, and till today they represent the primary product of our brand. The production increased and we enriched the collections with more sport clothing, and also elegant options: blazers and coats characterized as cold white winter season and, as previously said, the children collection. Beside our general offer we always give the chance to create a customized item chosen and selected from our clients, with a wide disposal of our fabrics.

Through the years we overcame difficult moments. Being sisters has been a positive experience, allowing us to have a connection that goes far beyond words, and most of all creativity. Rivers of words flow with no restraints when we have to confront each other or come to a final decision on something, we reach some points when we have to listen like we never knew each other.

thinktwice (23)

We had to make hard choices that ultimately proved to be precious for our professional growth, invigorating us. In the beginning the decision to open the shop in Arezzo was a challenge, we put more time and efforts on the creative side and to the improvement of the product quality. Italy is not known to assists businesses, nor the youngest in their entrepreneur path, especially if you are like us and chose the hard way of an artisan job. We are happy and proud to do what we love everyday and we strongly recommend whoever believes in this career to try.
Our website will soon be here where you can shop online:

Have you ever heard about OXFAM?

Talking about shops where you can purchase clothes (but also books, accessories, shoes, items for your house, small jewels, CDs and more) in Munich and all over Germany, I would like to mention OXFAM International and give you some good reasons why you should consider to shop there: www.oxfam.org

First of all I want to introduce it. OXFAM is an international organisation with the main objective to fight poverty. They act in many directions and with different projects all over the world and there are many opportunities to give a contribution, one of these is, for instance, to buy in one of the many shops they have all around Germany (unfortunately in Italy there are none, but you can get more information about the project “The fashion Circle”, OXFAM&COIN, www.oxfamitalia.org/agisci/womens-circle-for-change).

Get a glimpse here: www.oxfam.org/en/explore/how-oxfam-fights-poverty

To fight poverty means to fight for human rights, against discrimination, to give women more power and the chance to be an active part of the society, but it means also to help populations who live in areas of conflict in the world or in territories damaged from natural disasters. OXFAM is also putting effort into sustainability by selling fair- trade products.

www.oxfam.de

Ok, as said, OXFAM is the perfect representative of our philosophy, because on one side you can buy second- hand, if you are lucky really one- of- a- kind pieces, on the other side Oxfam enable its customers to save money and to donate a contribution, avoiding in this way an additional support of the mass production clothing industry. The result is totally positive, eventually you’ ll become the owner of new items and a new supporter of the development projects in several countries around the world… a brilliant idea!

www.oxfam.org/en/shop

You can find three shops in Munich, one in Schwabing, close to the University (Türkenstraße 81), one in Haidhausen (Orleansplatz 4, Munich East Station) and the other one close to Sendlinger Tor (Fraunhoferstraße 6). There is also one only for books (Fürstenfelder Straße 7 /Ecke Kaufinger Straße 5). Most of the time I go in the one in Fraunhoferstraße, between Gärtnerplatzviertel and Glockenbachviertel.

I already bought many precious things by OXFAM, like beautiful leather boots for 38€ or a pretty jacket from H&M for around 10€. I also bought a couple of cups (new) for 1€ or a couple of placemats for around 3€. I don’t recommend to go there if you look for something specific, probably you won’t find what you have in your mind but it is definitely worthy visiting and being surprised. These kind of shops are perfect for flexible people!

One more thing: do you wanna know where are the clothes coming from? Good question. Spick-and-span from people who don’t need them anymore!

Don’t forget that every Thursday from 15 pm the shop window will be unmade and you have the chance to buy the stuff that were part of it (it is not allowed to reserve items).

So, enjoy the shopping and be green!

You can find also Oxfam Great Britain – Oxfam Ireland – Oxfam New Zealand – Oxfam Novib (Netherlands) – Oxfam Intermón (Spain) – Oxfam Hong Kong – Oxfam Germany – Oxfam Australia – Oxfam-in-Belgium – Oxfam Japan – Oxfam France

KILENZ

You have to be passionate in what you do, every plan needs more time than what you imagined at the beginning.

Kilenz is Hanna and Anna’s delicate concept. It was a warm afternoon of summer when we decided to have a friendly chat with Hanna, 28 years old from Munich, in order to get to know their brand better. After 6- 7 years of studies and traineeships in several ateliers to gain experience, she pursued her dream with a friend, the other Anna, a former fellow student. In 2012 they launched Kilenz in a cellar in Munich, mainly friends and family were coming in, the main strategy was organizing parties to entertain and attract new clients and get known, was really though attracting more clients. In April 2014 they moved into the current atelier in Glockenbachviertel, since then their growth has been fast and stable.

Currently Hanna Wolf is leading Kilenz alone since Anna Hinterdobler left the business at the end of last year.

Let us talk about your marketing strategy.

The promotion of the brand happens most of the time by word of mouth, people have a look at the windows and come in, sometimes we produce small handouts and other times we throw nice parties so that our clients may have a drink, get to know the place, being intrigued by the product, the downside of this strategy is the small budget available, it is not easy to do everything we’d like to.

Second of all, it would be great to be a green company, regrettably it’s really expensive. More important: it’s hard to get the desired materials in organic or fair trade quality. The fact is that I really care about this issue, my mother who had an organic shop had a significant influence on me this is why environment is important to me.

How did you start to work together with Anna?

We started working in different companies but the fashion world is not an easy world, that’s why we decided to try to push ourselves beyond our limits and create something together. We spent half year thinking and discussing about the project, in January we started and in April the opening occurred presenting our first collection. Usually we work independently, each one of us on its own, in a second step we merge the ideas and it is definitely thrilling how they always fit.

Why the name Kilenz?

It means 9 in Hungarian: we started 9 years ago, me and Anna met 9 years ago. We changed the name a little bit, “Lenz” in German means Spring, we also tried to find a combination of different things that makes the name sound original.

Generally you opt for a static photo shoot, why?

I prefer to keep it simple and easy. I love it pure and straight, it shouldn’t be too much.

What are the people in Munich looking for?

Some people don’t know what they are looking for and most of the them don’t know what they’ll find by us. They come because they need a dress for a special day so we try to give them what they need, we showcase several options, starting from the colors for instance. We can customize everything or just details but we always stick to our style. We usually need around 6 weeks to realize a dress, but of course it depends on the specific case.

Do clients really realize how long it takes to make a dress?!

Usually they try to get earlier what they want! The first appointment is just to decide what the final desired product should be, after that my research focuses on the fabrics needed and eventually their purchase. In the following phase they come in to wear it on so we can start to make the right adjustments. Around 2-3 appointments are necessary to get the job done.

Which kind of customers come here?

They are so different: it could happen to be my neighbor or a princess!

It’s always exciting to find out the result of the combination of our style and their style. At the end of the day what matters is that we have both to be happy. If I think that the dress is not suitable for the customer, I just say it and we proceed only to produce something  that both we appreciate. It is a collaboration; if I do something that I don’t sincerely approve to be worthy, then at the end of the day nobody will be content.

From which fashion designer are you inspired?

I really love Dries van Noten. He is still independent and I think that this is great, he is really cool and successful. The whole concept is good, you can always notice when the clothes are from him.

How do you think you can inspire somebody?

“Less is More”, I want to show that simple things can be the right option. Fashion is often too much, too overloaded. A lot of people would look better if they rather choose the “Less”. I try to suggest to some of my friends for example, by telling them what they could try on, sometimes a person doesn’t understand alone what look is better for itself.

What would you say to somebody who show a dream like yours?

You have to be passionate in what you do, every plan needs more time than what you imagined at the beginning. Work very hard for a long time and later maybe you’ll get famous. I think that you need at least 4 or 5 years to see some results. It’s always a risk but you have to try. If you have a lot of money it can be easier, but otherwise you need a lot of creativity and work.

Our families strongly supported us, not financially but by doing for us everything they can, all the way until now they did everything necessary to make our dream happen.

What do the people say of your job?

Most of the time they only see the brightest side: they think that our job is amazing, they envy the fact we are able to spend our time doing something so creative, but they don’t realize the downside: for example, the struggle with the money, at the end of the month we have to count every penny because we don’t have a real salary, we need time and patience to get there.

Do you have time to travel? Where do you get your inspiration?

Unfortunately I don’t have so much time to do it as often as I would like. I often take my inspiration from the daily life, my environment and the people. Traveling is a way to get more and more inspiration, but anyway what I design is what I would like to wear and what my customer could actually wear in the daily life.

Any project for the future?

I would like to expand the brand and take the basic collection in more cities but what it is important for me is to lose not the contact with the reality, we like the glamour of the international world of fashion, yes, but our main goal is to have always real people wearing our clothes, I won’t ever sacrifice the connection with our regular customer.

Fiorella Migliore

Time teaches you to focus on the things that matter, take the positive and leave the negative aside…

Fiorella Migliore, born on 27th January 1989, also known as Fio, former Miss Italia in the World 2008, represented Paraguay in the Miss World Pageant in China in 2012. She is a young and successful entrepreneur who in 2013/2014 launched her Restaurant Be Okay. Rated 4.5 of 5 on TripAdvisor, Be Okay has been ranked number 6 out of 189 restaurants in Asuncion, Paraguay.

How did you changed through the years: Fio the university student, Fio former Miss Italia in the world 2008, Fio the actress, Fio the Entrepreneur?

I am the same person. I just feel more mature after all the experiences I lived. I always tried to find  and learn lessons from the past and I understood that everything happen for a reason: to learn how to be stronger and the best version you can be.

Disappointments, frustrations, failures experienced so far in this long professional path.

When I left for Los Angeles to study acting and to continue the career I started in Italy as actress, I had to face a very lonely life, sorrounded by evil people, even though some were really beautiful, I had to confront the craziest situations with a difficult manager who tried to pull me down, I choose to put an end, or a pause, to that special “dream” of mine. Afterward, I realized that was not MY dream but a nice fairy tale I was telling myself. So, I settled in Paraguay where I encountered my happiness and now I am happy more than ever.

Your greatest fear and your real strength.

My biggest fear is breaking down under fear. My biggest strength is the endless energy that created us, I prefer to call it God but I can also call it LOVE.

What astonish the people that meet you is not only your beauty but this wave of energeti10349216_718294108259907_6272566354967206386_nc vibes that you spread. What is your motor, how do you stay so positive?

Time teaches you to focus on the things that matter, take the positive and leave the negative aside. It is a daily exercise for me also; I try to improve the quality of the words that come out from my mouth, my thoughts,  the way I visualize the day and life, furthermore  I try to be contagious to others.

The motor is inside me and inside you, if you want and if you are prepared, you can do it. It is very important, having wonderful people around; in my case, my family is my strength since I was a kid. My brother is my angel, and thanks to God, I have found my partner of life and adventure, Juanjo. I met him three years ago, and he is my fiance’ and business partner for one year now. He pushes me harder and helps me to find a solution to every issue I’m faced with.

What pushed you to open the restaurant “Be Okay” in Asunción?

My head was exploding with all the information I have been feeding myself; about how to improve health, about how we harm the little ones, and how we damage the planet. We could not find a better option than to put ourselves in the first row and act directly, now we are ready to offer our personal solution.

What do you dream for your future and for Paraguay?

I would like to spread the seed of Love and get to every city of the World. I visualize also part of my life also in Italy with Juanjo and with my future kids. I would like my family on my side in this path and all my fellows to become brothers and sisters. For Paraguay I wish a strong conscience and wake up to be better human beings in order to reach happiness.

What about your bond with Italy?

I learned in Italy how to be independent, I grew up faster. I became more attached to this land which I already loved so much. I am confident that one day I could live a bit there and bit here.

Who inspired you professionally and personally?

Professionally I haven’t followed anyone so much so far, but I could tell that there is one name which inspire me in a peaceful way, Angelina Jolie and also Natalie Portman. In my private life, what gives me more inspiration is the oriental philosophy assimilated through Yoga discipline, it brought me peace and self- confidence. I will mention my brother, my fiance’, my parents, my friends Titi, Sofia, Jade, Emma and a lot of other friends that are always by my side. And, I always refer to that energetic strength I told you at the beginning… LOVE.

Johnny K. Palmer

The biggest lesson I learned is that you can’t do everything alone!  You need a good team around you.

Born in Budapest, Hungary, as the eldest son of a Jamaican pastor, Johnny was raised with music all around him. His earliest memories of performing were those of his family of eight caroling in their Austrian neighborhood on cold Christmas nights. As caroling is mostly unknown in Europe, they were often greeted by bewildered stares upon ringing the doorbells and had to convince the confused neighbors that they were not singing for money. “Whenever we sang I would see people’s faces light up and I realized that it only took so much to make someone happy.”

Growing up mainly in Vienna, Austria, as well as regularly traveling all over Europe while accompanying his father on his many journeys, gave him a multi-cultural worldview. This approach had a meaningful influence on Johnny’s style of performance. His openness and ability to create an almost immediate connection to his audience is fascinating to experience. It is impossible to be a passive bystander once Johnny makes his entrance.

The first step toward his musical career began through his love for dancing. At the age of thirteen he formed his first HipHop dance group, and soon started composing his first rap lines which eventually led to more. After receiving an offer for a record deal with Universal Music Austria as part of a boy-band project, he consequently went on to sign with Universal releasing 2 singles, an album, and touring Austria as one of the 4 members of the group “JetztAnders”.

Johnny played countless shows and events in Germany, Holland, Rumania, France, Belgium, England, Switzerland, USA, Jamaica as well as his native countries Austria and Hungary. He gained experience and “know-how” by sharing stages with big names like Delirious, T-Bone, Jermaine Jackson, Kevin Max and Kirk Franklin and worked with TV networks (RTL, ORF, Puls4…etc) as well as major companies (McDonalds, Nike, YWAM Kayiko,…etc.). Johnny Palmer starred in the German-Austrian Motion Picture “Kottan Ermittelt” (2010). And the video for his single “Break Away” made it into the top 10 charts all around Europe. This lead to his nomination for the 2012 VIVA COMET AWARD in the Category BEST NEW ARTIST.  Also a very active songwriter, he has worked for internationally known TV formats like XFactor, The Voice, Megastar and the Eurovision Song Contest.

Date of birth

I was born on May 30th 1984 in Budapest.

Was a beautiful initiative as a family to go door by door and sing for the Austrian Families during Christmas, why this choice?

Christmas Caroling is an American tradition that we were already accustomed to from television and other American Culture media references. My father didn’t have to explain anything to us. My mom’s family lives in America and in Jamaica they have a lot of American traditions too so I guess that’s how it became part of our family traditions as well!

What would you suggest to who is out there and would like to follow your same career?

Be diligent and never give up! Talent alone will only get you so far but talent paired with commitment and hard work will go a long way!

What do you feel when you are on stage?

When you are on stage it is about transmitting an emotion and getting a response! So if the audience responds well you feel energized and are able to give back an even higher emotion. But there are always cases when the audience does not respond well (or at least not in the way you expect them too) in this case being on stage can be very frustrating! Generally I think people come to a music event to shift the focus from everyday trouble and the worries of life… so when on stage our mission is to help the crowd to do that! We take them away into a different world with us where they can forget their everyday life for an hour or two. Also often music brings up memories from the past, memories that tie you to big emotions.

Each one of us face several obstacles on the way to reach our dreams: which obstacles gave you troubles or difficulties and how did you manage them?

The main obstacles are lack of knowledge and experience, then you have lack of contacts and off course money! The biggest lesson I learnt is that you can’t do everything alone!

You need a good team around you.

Only then can you make progress! Over the years I studied myself and made a honest assessment of what it is I am good at and where it is that I need help. And then I went out and looked for people that do those things better than I do. A big point also is you have to be a good communicator, you have to know what you want and be able to convince people to join you in the mission of achieving that goal. Find out what it is that makes you valuable and find people that are willing to trade that value for something they have that is valuable to you!

Why the choice of not having a website but this strong presence on social media?

Want me to tell the truth? We haven’t had the time to do a website since we opened! And it seems, people, and especially our public, are very familiarized with social networks in these days. We love being this close with them, and having them more as friends than costumers. I feel social networks make the connection closer and that’s what Be Okay’s supposed to have.

Why do you always use these words, happiness, health, love, power. What do they mean for you?

They are the north for us, as team. It’s how we want to see the world and the people. Healthy, happy, full of love and power. This is what surrounds me since I joined this lifestyle and is what I want to share with everybody.

When have you decided to go vegan?

I didn’t decide to be vegan. It just came to me as the light at the end of the tunnel. I arrived there step by step following a natural and self love path. I prefer not using tags, they seem to create a distance with others. But I totally agree and support vegan philosophy. I want to live healthy and many years, I love animals, I want to fight and to stop global warming (as the farmed animal industry is the biggest cause of it) and I don’t want bad karma: this is why I changed my lifestyle. I want to be coherent with my feelings of love and gratitude with the life I have been given, and with the earth that is our home, and what I eat, wear, do or say, is how I manifest it.

What is it so special about Paraguay and Asuncion?

The rhythm of life, the nice and warm people, the nature, the opportunities and the flavors of fruits and veggies. Haha!

How much Italian kitchen influenced this choice to open a restaurant and the menus?

Maybe not for the opening but yes we have many Italian options, my babbo pushed me to add Italian flavors and those are just amazing, and please tell me: who doesn’t LOVE Italian FOOD?!

How is the restaurant going so far?

Super good. People are happy to have this option and to start learning about this new- but- ancestral lifestyle. We keep changing many things as the time goes by and We enjoy creating and innovating.

Which satisfaction gave you until today?

Thinking globally, it feels like giving birth and having a baby. Be okay is actually our baby. And it’s satisfying watching him making his first steps. And growing so fast!

What was so difficult about managing a restaurant of this kind?

The day by day is the most difficult part. Offering a service is like riding a roller coaster! And even more when it is about food. It’s not like a shop that once it’s time, you just close and go home. But it’s good if you like adrenaline.
